It’s Labor Day and high time to “check in” on all the labor going on at the Rome International Film Festival. It is nice to know that the creative director at the Rome International Film Festival—one Seth “Ignominious” Ingram—has taken it upon himself to make sure that the rednecks in Floyd County can now sing in Spanish. Recently, Ole Seth “Ignominious” Ingram sponsored a Spanish “sing-a-long” at the DeSoto Theater—apparently the irony of the ill-named “Desoto” being beyond the intellectual parameters of Ole Seth.
Loyal Crier readers will recall this is the same Seth “Ignominious” Ingram that wrote and directed a film back in November 2021 and used the festival that he managed in order to boost his own film, all at the expense of other filmmakers who lacked influential positions at RIFF—a clear abuse of power and undermining of the public trust. Discover the facts here.
Well anyway, Ole Seth “Ignominious” Ingram is at it again.
Recently, Ole Seth “Ignominious” Ingram chose to screen Encanto. Ole Seth chose this venue and film because “parts of the songs and dialogue are in Spanish [and] the Northwest Regional Commission tells us that Spanish is the second-most spoken language in this area, and more than 12% of all the people in Floyd County consider themselves ‘Hispanic’ according to the most recent US Census.” This was how Ole Seth quoted himself on the RIFF website.
Presumably, due to the success of this Spanish “sing-a-long,” RIFF is now changing its subtitle rules.
The old rules declared the following: “We consider films in any language, from anywhere in the world. English subtitles are required.”
Presumably, the new rule will read thus: “We consider films in any language, from anywhere in the world. But, English subtitles are not required for Spanish films because Spanish is the coolest language and 12% of the population in Floyd County speaks Spanish. We be cool, so here’s the new rule for Spanish subtitles—they ain’t necessary because we did an Encanto ‘sing-a-long’. As we move toward more diversity, inclusion, and equity (or DIE), we want to discourage non-Spanish speakers by creating a Tower of Babel, all the while endorsing Spanish over English. In fact, RIFF will now set-up information kiosks at the Southern border in order to better promote Spanish speaking films in Floyd County.”
These new subtitle rules will take affect at the upcoming festival scheduled for November 2023.
